RiRi closed The Summertime Ball 2010 tonight (June 6) in London. Over 85 thousand people were there. Unfortunately, we believe there will be no professional videos.

The most talked aspect from “Rock in Rio” is definitely Rihanna’s new redhair cut. How do you like it? It’s definitely a brave move but she looks hot in everything! I can’t wait however to see her hair a little longer.

THE SHOW IS OVER

Rihanna will be going to Penticton, Canada this summer.

The Barbadian pop-singer, who has delivered several chart-topping songs including Umbrella, Don’t Stop the Music, SOS, and Rude Boy, will play the South Okanagan Events Centre on July 5. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m.

With several international and domestic No. 1 songs in the last four years, Rihanna is probably the hottest act Global Spectrum has booked for the SOEC since the building’s opening in 2008.

“We haven’t done really any top 40 music here yet so this has been kind of exciting,” said GS general manager Curtis Webb. “Her numbers are really off the charts right now on concert sales. She has re-created herself so many different ways since 2007 when she really stepped onto the scene. Her music has stayed in the top 40 and I think that is pretty much a testament to her.

“I hope we have a major sellout here by the end of the weekend.”

Webb said that Global has looked at booking several larger more-current popular acts, like Rihanna, as they pass between Vancouver and other nearby cities.

“What we have really been trying to target is those artists that come between Vancouver and Calgary,” he said. “I’ve looked at thousands of acts coming through … But a lot of them just don’t make sense because of the financial aspects of it but (Rihanna) is one of those artists that has sold GM Place out really quick.”

Neither Webb nor the city would disclose how much the city is paying Rihanna to play the SOEC — Global competes with other venues to book acts, explained city clerk Cathy Ingram, so releasing the figure would give competitors an advantage — although the amount is somewhere between the $100,000 Rihanna charges to sit in the audience at fashion shows and the $500,000 she received to sing at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi New Year’s Eve.

“She is very expensive,” said Webb, And so are the tickets, set at $95, $120, $145 and $300.

“To do a deal to get a Rihanna date here and a Rihanna date in Vancouver is the same price, but in Vancouver they have 18,000 seats and we have 5,300 here. So, the difference is that we have to be a little bit more expensive on our ticket prices to bring an act like Rihanna to town,” Webb explained. “But the positive side to that is: you might spend $40 more on a ticket here but you don’t have to drive to Vancouver, and you don’t have to spend money on gas, hotel and the food … Plus, you can walk out of here in five minutes and drive home.”

Webb said that successful shows such as Brooks & Dunn or Alan Jackson, who are handled by the same agency as Rihanna, helped Global Spectrum book her, and that similarly, if Rihanna’s show is a success it will become even easier to attract other big acts to Penticton.

“We are definitely pushing the boundaries on Rihanna but I think that you have to go after some of these artists,” said Webb. “It is a good time of the year, the summer months. July is right in the thick of our summer hot season. It is a perfect fit.

“I’d like to do more of it because that’s why we are here. We just have to keep growing our business … It is on us to market the show and produce the numbers to overcome (Rihanna’s fee).”
