Even if she had never met Chris Brown, Rihanna knew how domestic abuse could turn into a vicious cycle.

“I always anticipated it happening. At night I wouldn’t want to sleep, because I was too afraid it would happen,” the singer said in the portion of her ABC News interview that aired on 20/20 tonight, referring to her father hitting her mother when she was a child growing up in Barbados.

“She never went to the hospital, but he broke her nose.,” Rihanna continued. “She would never go to the hospital…Domestic violence is not somebody that people want anbody to know, so she would just hide it in the house. I always said to myself, ‘I’m never going to date somebody like my dad, never.’

“I always said that.”

And yet she not only dated someone who hit her, she went back to him after the fact.

“Lying to yourself again, [I thought], What is he going through? I had to protect him,” she explained. “The whole world hates him now. His fans, his career, he lost me—I just need to let him know don’t do anything stupid.

But Rihanna ended things shortly after she and Brown rendezvoused in Miami.

“I resented him so much, and I always put the tough face on…the ‘I can do anything’ face, tried to play it off,” she said. “But he knew… He kept asking me, ‘You hate me, don’t you? You hate me,’ and I would lie and say, ‘No.’”

Finally, she mustered up the strength to break up for good.

“Everything about him annoyed me, him being around me, him talking to me. Everything was annoying for me…So finally I just said, ‘We can’t do this. I cannot continue to do this.”

As for Brown, who several years ago talked about his stepfather hitting his mother, Rihanna surmised, “He forgot the pain he witnessed with his mom.”

She said that Brown’s YouTube apology sounded “like he might have been reading off a Teleprompter.

“I know that he felt really bad,” she added. “I just didn’t know if he understood the extent of what he did. The thing that men don’t realize, when they hit a woman—the face, the broken arm, the black eye, it’s going to heal. That’s not the problem. It’s the scar inside. You flash back, you remember it all the time. It comes back to you whether you like it or not, and it’s painful.

“I don’t think he understood that. They never do. They can’t know that.”

What does she want to hear Brown say now?

“Nothing,” she replied bluntly. “What I want, is for him to accept this as a man would and accept the responsibility, and not find a way to feel sorry for himself.”

Last night Rihanna headed to Guys & Dolls in a decidedly Posh-inspired outfit. X17 is hearing that Ri was kicking it with Gym Class Heroes singer Travis McCoy.

Rihanna arrived at the club at 1:10am, and she was escorted through the hotspot straight to her VIP table in the middle of the room, where she sipped on champagne with her entourage. A source inside the club tells X17online exclusively:

“She was loving the music the DJ was playing, and she danced in her seat and on the couch to a bunch of Jay-Z songs. The DJ also played a couple of her own songs and she had a huge smile on her face and her friends were dancing up a storm. After all the Chris Brown drama this past year, it was great to see her moving on and looking so happy!”

After Rihanna left the club, it seems like she had a case of the munchies, as she had her driver stop by McDonalds. Her bodyguards tried in vain to block shots of the R&B starlet.

Good Morning America aired another snippet of Rihanna’s revealing interview with Diane Sawyer this morning, and the details she disclosed about the night Chris Brown beat her were haunting.

“He had no soul in his eyes,” Rihanna said of Brown’s state of mind during the attack. “He was clearly blacked out. There was no person when I looked at him.”

Rihanna says the deeper the two “best friends” fell in love, the more dangerous they became for each other “equally.”

“It was a bit of an obsession.”

She says the night before the Grammys when the two were driving back to her house after attending Clive Davis‘ party turned “ugly” because she saw a text message from another woman on his phone and she “caught him in a lie.”

“I couldn’t take that he kept lying to me and he couldn’t take that I wouldn’t drop it. His back was up against the wall. The truth is right here in a text message. It escalated into him being violent towards me.”

As hard as it appeared for Rihanna to think back to the night, that she says “was not part of my plan,” she admits she still loves Chris. “I don’t hate him at all. I actually love and care about him, and I’m concerned about him doing well. I want him to do well, have a great career, have a great life, and grow up.”

“I am beyond excited – it was the easiest decision I’ve ever made,” she said. “A lot of people watch the show over here on You Tube and I personally caught a lot of it when Leona Lewis was on who’s an amazing artist. So to say yes to Simon was an honour, especially as I know the show so well.”

“Just when you think somebody was perfect and that it can’t happen to you, it does,” she says. “I’ve definitely emerged stronger after the year I’ve had. Going through a rough experience like that makes you tougher and to get through it takes a lot of guts. I’m naturally a survivor but it’s been hard to say the least. I just tried to live my life but it was hard. I was in the spotlight but for all the wrong reasons. Whereas once it was about my music, now all the attention was focused on what happened to me. It was what I call a big interruption. But then with any big life experience, it makes you more resilient.”

Rihanna says she’s now determined to turn her negative experience into a positive.

“Many people go through something real like this and to sufferers, it’s almost as if you’re not allowed to talk about it,” she says. “I like to think that from the beginning of my career, people have looked up to me. Hopefully this story is something else that people can take inspiration from. I want to help young women who have been through this sort of violence. There is help out there.”
