2005: Rihanna performed “Pon de Replay” at the pre-show;
2006: Rihanna was nominated in the categories “Best New Artist in a Video” and “Viewer’s Choice”. Ne-Yo and Rihanna presented “Ringtone of the Year”;
2007: Rihanna was nominated for “Video of the Year” (with Umbrella), “Female Artist of the Year” and “Monster Single of the Year” (with Umbrella). Rihanna won 2 awards and the “Umbrella” video director won the “Best Director” award. Rihanna performed “Umbrella” with her ex-boyfriend and “Shut Up And Drive” with Fall Out Boy;
2008: Rihanna opened the 2008 VMAs performing “Disturbia“. “Take A Bow” was nominated for “Best Female Video” and the video’s director was nominated for “Best Direction in a Video”. Rihanna also performed “Live Your Life” with T.I.;
2009: Rihanna didn’t attend the awards show.
