RihannaDaily.com had the pleasure to ask Karin Darnell, one of Rihanna’s make up artists, 10 questions. Check them out:
RihannaDaily: How did you start working with Rihanna?
Karin Darnell: I started working with Rihanna about 4 years ago! I was her make up artist in the UK and Europe. This progressed to USA and rest of the world just over a year ago. From the ‘Hard’ video onwards.RihannaDaily: Are you a fan of her/were you a fan before you’ve started working together?
Karin Darnell: When I started working with Rihanna, only ‘Pon the Replay’ had been released, I loved the song and after I met her, I loved working with her too!
I work with many major artists and you never know where things may lead and how an artists career will go! I was certain Rihanna would turn out to be a major artist, but as an English make up artist, based in London, I could never have anticipated my future role in her image! And I feel truly blessed and genuinely enjoy the creative process working along side Ursula (hair) and Mariel and Rob (stylists) and or course with Rihanna herself!
RihannaDaily: Is Rihanna allowing you to put any kind of make-up you suggest or does she participate in the process of creation of her look?
Karin Darnell: Whenever I answer questions about the make up looks on Rihanna, I always acknowledge it as a collaboration between Rihanna and myself! Everything is a work in progress! We both love fashion, and trends! Rihanna ‘gets it!’ I like to move forward all the time. Make up is there… to experiment with and to celebrate. Sometimes extreme but always an expression of the moment! Rihanna is the perfect artist, she is most importantly, open minded and unafraid! This is rare! Very rare! I have been in the business for over 20 years, and I appreciate how special it is!
RihannaDaily: What is your inspiration? Do you plan in advance of a make-up style or is it spontaneous?
Karin Darnell: Both Rihanna and I, always have ideas up our sleeves! I collect inspirational images and references… but always, as I start on Rihanna’s face, things evolve… it is a very organic process! And an amazing creative relationship!RihannaDaily: Rihanna decided for a surprising change of her hair color recently as well as the complete style. Did it result in some change in her makeup? She’s definitely using more red lipstick but what about eye shadows, eyeliners etc?
Karin Darnell: We have all been talking about this latest change of image for ages….at last everyone is beginning to see it! Along with the amazing red hair, a make up change is always sure to follow! Every hairstyle, outfit change and event, dictates a make up moment!!! Always less obvious than the hair, but always there, never-the-less! Ursula and I love to work together, we ‘push’ each other hard! Its great! The ‘new look’ is softer than ever before! There are no hard lines or dark eyes! Just soft pastel, feminine eyes with fluttery lashes! Colours don’t need to match… maybe just surprise you a little… with an unusual colour wash or hue! Sometimes I like to bring out the red lip for impact! And that’s enough!RihannaDaily: Which of her looks let you to be the most creative?
Karin Darnell: The latest look is always the most creative!!! If we work every day things change everyday!!!!RihannaDaily: Do you tend to watch YouTube make up artists who try to create Rihanna inspired look? How do you feel if you see someone trying to re-create “your designs”? Like the look from “Rude Boy”, “Hard” or “Rockstar 101″ videos?
Karin Darnell: Sometimes I look at the ‘youtube’ make up tutorials! They are AMAZING! The speed at which they hit youtube both, shocks and surprises me! Also the depth at which these artists have studied my work is faultless! I am always flattered that people have even noticed!
Let alone tried it out too! I often want to make a comment, but I would seem a little self-indulgent if I did! (They probably would believe me anyway!) Mostly I just want to say…Yay! Lovin your work! They are genuinely, really good!RihannaDaily: What’s your favorite Rihanna make-up you did in your opinion?
Karin Darnell: I’m afraid, I could never pick a favourite make up look! A lot come to mind but for many different reasons!RihannaDaily: Rihanna has always 100% perfect lips. What do you do to make them look so good like she just got her lipstick no matter if it’s a photo shoot or regular day?
Karin Darnell: Lips, for many artists are tricky… not for me! I just love doing a perfect lip! I like a lip to look feminine, rounded and full, whatever the colour! It’s just as important to get the shape right, whether a sheer nude or a loaded dark colour!RihannaDaily: What could you suggest to Rihanna fans who wish to copy her look?
Karin Darnell: If someone wanted to copy a Rihanna look… Then take inspiration from Rihanna and make it your own look! Own it! Whether a pastel eye or a red lip, just make it wearable, and carry it off with confidence!
